I built KUIU to create significant change; change ...

I built KUIU to create significant change; change I strongly believe you deserve in uncompromised products made with the finest materials and manufacturing on the planet.  Change with a brand that is open to share its world-class suppliers such as Toray, The Merino Company and Pittards Leather to give you confidence in its products. Change with a brand that listens to its customers and respects their ideas and opinions.

There are a lot of questions, speculation and concerns regarding prices for KUIU products. I totally understand, as we have developed this line without price targets. Carbon Fiber pack frames and removing 4 pounds from your layering system are the results of using this model, a model that creates significant change.

The Internet has forever changed retail. Fortunately, we no longer have to rely on a retail sales person to tell us what raingear to buy for a once in a lifetime sheep hunt.  The Internet has given us the power to research products and brands, read unbiased reviews, post reviews, post complaints and become experts in the gear we buy.

Retailers no longer have to be experts of the products they sell because the customer is.  The Internet has changed retail into a self-service business, hang it on the rack or wait for an order on-line and ship it. The model has changed; we do the research, should we still pay the same prices? 40% to 50% retail mark-up?

I respect how much passion you have for this sport.  How much time you spend researching gear and intimately knowing the products you trust your life with in the mountains. It is clear by how much you have been involved in the development of the KUIU product line on this blog.

As a dedication to you and your passion, KUIU will be sold exclusively on line at kuiu.com at wholesale prices.  The same price I would sell KUIU to a retailer. I have enclosed the 2011 wholesale and retail price list to give you a clear understanding of what this will save you.

    Jason,

All I can say is WOW! I would have thought for sure that this stuff was going to be priced even higher then Sitka Gear. Since I started reading this blog I have been saving my money, with the idea that I would spend the next several years building a collection, but then you come along and make a post like this. Again WOW. Thank you for thinking of the customer first. You truely have done this in all aspects of the KUIU line. I mean this and I’m not trying to kiss butt.

    Again Thank You

We will presale in mid-March for KUIU blog subscribers and March 31st for the rest. I will be previewing the line on the blog from now till then. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Jason

      • Doug Reply

Excellent Jason. Seeing you take the time to answer all of these inquiries shows alot about not only you but the Kuiu line. I do have a quiestion. Can you describe the Guide Hat a little? I really favor a brimmed beanie (I’m asking since I currently am forced to wear a Carhartt acrylic one since only First Lite seems to make good hunting one). They’re perfect for hunting. I’m guessing the merino gator you mentioned is a neck gator. Will you be offering a boot gaiter at some time? I have a bunch more technical questions but they can wait until you blog more about the line in detail.

        Thanks again for your responses!

        • Jason Hairston Reply

          Hi Doug,

Thank you for the comments and nice words. The guide hat is a soft shell beanie, it does not have a brim. However, this is a product that I have been wanting to design. Who makes the best version of this type of hat? I would love to look at this for direction? The merino gator is a neck gator, I am working on a gator design right now for 2012 release. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cant wait to see more specs on the product line. I have been looking at replacing many of my dated hunting clothes this winter – and put the whole process on hold when I found out about Kuiu. Now I am glad I am waiting.

One Question – will your hats be ‘one size fits most’ or will they actually fit someone/and wear well on a 7 3/4 – 7 5/8 head? There is some prime marketing space available on my forehead for a nice camo hat that fits well.

    Cant wait till pre-order time.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Rod,

Our hats are adjustable and I believe will fit your head size. If they do not I will take it back for you. Thanks for your interest and support of KUIU.

  32. riley Reply

I’ve been anxiously watching the developement of this clothing line and the prices look great but am not thrilled about the camo pattern. Looks great for hunting in the desert or where all the vegetation is dead. A gray pattern would have maybe tipped the scales in the other direction for me. I look forward to maybe having something else to choose from next year.

    Good luck

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Riley,

Hang in there with me on the pattern, I totally understand your concerns. There are 5 colors in this pattern and two are grey. I will have some better photos of the pattern in the correct colors for you prior to launch. Maybe this will change your mind? I would love to earn your business.

      Jason

      • Riley Reply

Oh wow, I honestly didn’t expect anything other than the original camo that I’ve seen on all the hunts you’ve posted. I just expected that it would be one pattern a year like sitka. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed. Well you may just get my business then. I’m in the market for some gear for a sheep hunt in the Brooks Range this fall.

        Thank you!

Jason, do you mean that you have 5 different color variations for your camo pattern, or the pattern itself has 5 different colors in it. Sorry, I’m a little slow. Thanks. I’m pumped.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

There is one pattern with 5 different colors in it. You mentioned wanting a pattern with more grey and 45% of this pattern is grey. I know it is hard to tell with the photos so far, but I did not want you to give up on the pattern until you have a better photo of the color adjusted pattern. It looks way better than what you have seen so far. Thank you for your comment and questions.

Jason, a blog post on how you came up with the colors for the pattern and the pattern itself would be helpful. I am planning on pre ordering in March but would like to know more about the theories behind the colors, they are way different than anything else out there. This is Great, Jason! KUIU is already getting a little buzz on some of the hunting forums up here in BC, and guys looking to gear up for this August (sheep season opener) are getting excited about new gear on the market. There was some speculation that the KUIU pricing would be unaffordable by the “average joe” and that’s just not going to be true!

With the CAD dollar so strong I think you’ll see a lot of orders coming from our direction… I’ve thrown up a banner for you on my homepage to help you pump up your mailing list and spread the word!

      Hi Dan,

I am working on a new development with a heavier weight 100% merino in the 300gm/m2 range with a lofted inside for warmth. It is as warm as a 400g/m2 with out the weight. This will not be available until next season. Thanks for the comment and questions.

  67. Doc Reply

    Jason,

I know I’m probably jumping the gun a little bit, and I don’t doubt that my question will get answered in a later post, but I just gotta ask. Why did you decide to go with 2 different base layer shirts? I can pretty much predict that one is a light layer and the other is heavier, but in your older post when you were talking about Merino Company. You explain how “19.5 micron fibers are not as comfortable”, which lead me to believe that you were going to go with just the 17.5 micron. Is the Merino 250 meant to go over top of the 150 or were you able to develop 20.5 micron shirt that is comfortable to wear?
Also, I’ve been rereading this post nonstop for the last 2 days. I know who said you are going to release additional post with more detail on each product, but if by change you get time would there be any way we could get another overview post of your entire line with just a little bit more detail on each product? I’m like a little kid right before Christmas with all the presents sitting under the tree. I can’t take it =) For example….

Chugach Jacket – Rain Gear Jacket
Chugach Pants – Rain Gear Pants
Merino 185 Gator – Neck Gator
    etc……

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Doc,

Im impressed! Great question regarding the Merino, you have been doing your homework:) The 250g shirt is to be worn over your 185g shirt. I chose after testing the 20.5 micron size for durability as this weight will take more abuse than the 17.5 micron shirt which you give up durability for comfort. Yes, hang tight I will be doing a review of each style between now and the launch, starting with the packs next week. Thank you for the comments and questions.

I was pleasantly shocked to see your pricing model! Kudos to you for making quality gear affordable to everyone!

I am really looking forward to getting my hands on your gear! I have way more hunting apparel than I could ever wear, but your new products and personal attention to development really intrigues me. Anytime the wifey complains about me buying more hunting clothes, I just throw up her shoe and purse fetish……works every time…lol.

I currently have lots of Sitka stuff, both older and new, and I am/was a huge fan of Sitka gear, but I have a strong feeling that I am about to be a huge KUIU convert!

I take a few trips each year out west, but my “home range” is the mountains of Northern Alabama and Southern Tennessee. I am primarily a tree tand hunter in my “home range”, but do ALOT of walking/hiking off the ATV trails to hunt the rough places.

I read in previous posts that you were going to have multiple camo options? Are you going to offer a more “woodsy” color/pattern for us forest/wooded still hunters?

PS: Any chance that I could get a sticker? 😉

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi David,

I look forward to getting you into this new gear line. The camo you are seeing in the photos has not be color adjusted. The final pattern is made up of two tones of grey, tan, brown and black. It is really universal with the goal to break up your outline at distance and not blob. The final version may have a more woodsy color pattern like you are asking about.

I would love to get you a sticker. Go to kuiu.com and click on the box on the bottom right and put in your information and we will get you one out right away.

Thanks for the questions and comments.

    Jason,

Man, it’s true…..you don’t sleep…..lol. Thanks for the quick response!

That sounds awesome! A combination of grey, tan, brown, and black would work great in the mountains hunting for those elusive whitetails! I actually love the look and definition of the pattern pictured in your blogs, the colors were actually the only concern. With the two tones of grey, tan, brown, and black, I will be able to be invisible anywhere I go!

I’m stoked! I have a feeling once I get my hands on your new gear, I will be putting my “other” stuff up for sale on Craigslist, haha.

I went to your website earlier and signed up for a sticker. I’m hoping that it will hold me over until March! 😉

Jason: I have a concern about the sizing for your products. I get it that you are appealing to the serious mountain hunters, who, for the most part are young studs running up and down the mountains. I have done a lot of hunting in my time, from Alaska and the Yukon to Africa. But now I am a 58 year old dentist who sits on my ass every day working on people’s mouths. I am not out of shape: I work out regularly, I hike around the hills with a pack on, and I can bench press 225 pounds. I am 6 feet tall, 220 pounds, with a 42 inch waist, a big upper body, and a few extra pounds of fat. I understand the benefits of good mountain gear, which can certainly make your hunt more enjoyable and perhaps even safer. From a marketing point of view, there are a lot of older guys like me out there who can afford the best. However, we are not those 20 or 30 year old studs with the “athletic build” who stomp around sheep mountains like they are little hills. I guess I will have to wait for your sizing information to know for certain, but maybe all I will be able to order is the backpack, gloves, hat, and maybe some base layers.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Tom,

I completely understand your concerns and needs. I have had larger sizing requests by others as well. This is something I will certainly take into serious consideration for future development. I would be more compelled to create a different sizing set so both groups are fit correctly. Thank you for bringing this up so I can address it.

Merino zip-tees for $70. Softshell pants for $140! I can’t wait to see the pictures of and read about the Attach Pants. I am also excited about the Pittard gloves since you already showed us those, again I was afraid they’d be in the $100 range – and they WOULD have been – but they aren’t!

Also really excited to see the packs.

I always buy myself something for my birthday (in early March), something that I really want and will use (a fly rod blank, a tying vise, a gun, etc – you know, the stuff you really know you want but that isn’t a likely gift) well the timing of your release is perfect. I know you’ll be covering each item in detail in the weeks to come but I have a few quick questions to help me figure how your clothing will work into my system.

Attack pants: Which Sitka pant would you say they are most like…Ascent, Mountain, 90%…?

Base Layers: Will any of the tops come with a hood? What does BTM stand for?

I look forward to getting my hands on this stuff. I had your sticker on my truck this past hunting season and had a bunch of people really interested in who you were. Like me it seemed their main concern was that the gear was going to be priced out of our grasp. I’m really excited to see it isn’t. I just hope I can get some before it sells out. Thanks again.

    • Larry Schwartz Reply

      Ray,

I think BTM stands for BoTtoM, in other words the pants.

    • JC Reply

I am guessing: BotToM, as in long underwear 🙂

I too am excited to see the full line including the Attack pants, Guide and Spindrift jackets.

    • Curt Cabrera Reply

Ray, Just to help Jason out a bit since he’s so busy…I’ll try to answer your questions since I’ve had my hands a a few of the proto type products. I’m sure he’ll be alaong soon…

The Attach pants in my opinion is closest to the original (’06,’07) Mountain pants. They were my, as well as others, favotite of all the Sitka pants. But the best thing about the Attack pants is that they are lighter in physical weight, stretch far better, and are more durable. Toray Stretch weave is awesome!

Base Layers: I’m pretty sure that none of the base layers coming out soon will have hoods, the 185 Zip-T that I wore didn’t. The jackets will have that covered though.
      BTM=Bottoms

      Hope this helps…

      • Ray Knechtel Reply

Thanks for the info all. I don’t know why I didn’t think bottom for the BTM. I never got my hands on a pair of the older mountain pants but I have used the Ascent, Mountain (new), and 90% elk hunting. I really liked Sitka’s new Mountain pant except they’re heavy. Something as warm, robust and stretchy but lighter would be perfect. I have high hopes for the Attach pants.

      • Jason Hairston Reply

        Thanks for the help Curt!

        J

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Ray,

Good question about the attack pant. It is a 225g/m2 Toray Primeflex stretch woven pant. Which means it is a thicker fabric, similar to the new Mountain Pant, but because of Toray’s patented spiral yarn technology the pant only weighs 18oz instead of 28 to 30oz. It is a substantially “thicker” fabric than the Ascent pant but weights 6oz less for another comparison. This fabric is like nothing you have ever experienced. A truly amazing product by Toray.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

The Guide jacket has a bomber hood and always had one designed. The jacket I think you are referring to is the Spindrift and there is not hood because it is an insulation layering piece. Thanks for the question.

      Hi Joe,

The attack pant does not have knee pads. The pack does not come with a rainfly. There are several companies that make a fly that will fit the packs and this information will be available on the website when we launch the line. I am planning to develop rain fly’s for them in 2012. Too much to develop this season to get them squeezed in. I hope you can understand.

Just reading all of the blogs over the past few months has really allowed us to understand the differences between types of materials and equipment. Jason – as a guy that owns a retail website/shop, I’m bummed out that I won’t be offering Kuiu to my customers, but that’s pretty much the end of my disappointment with Kuiu. I’ve been following the blog since the second post and I’ve gotta say that I completely admire and respect what you’re doing. As a hunter I’m stoked for the path that lies ahead for you and Kuiu and will certainly be ordering up a collection to hunt in and put to the test.

I’ve been involved with a ski company for the past 4 years that has been doing the same thing – community driven design and feedback with direct to consumer pricing and sales that follows the “retail is dead” premise. The response here is equal to what we’ve seen in the ski world. Again, nice job, stoked for your future…and for hunting in some Kuiu next fall.

    Hi Jason,
When I first started following your blog I was excited to see that somebody finally “gets it” – the best materials, the best designs, and the highest degree of functionality out there. I mentally started making my gear wish list, but then realized I’d probably only be able to budget for one piece a year, as “gear” for my 14 month old twins (boy and girl) comes first right now. At that rate I figured I’d have everything I wanted about the time the twins head to college… After seeing the pricing all I can say is THANK YOU!, and add at an astoundingly affordable price to the best materials, the best designs, and the highest degree of functionality out there.

    Thanks,

    Kit

This gear looks like it’s going to be great! Will the attack pants have back pockets with zippers? Are there going to be many sizes and are the sizes going to be similar to other pants or like Sitka where you have to size up and guess what might fit?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi David,

The Attack pant will have zippered rear pockets and sizing will be in even waist sizes for a better fit.

Am I reading this correctly, that the Icon frame is versatile in that you purchase the frame and then have the ability to attach either the 3000 bag or the 6000 bag?? Also, can the frame be used independently??

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Cody,

Great question. The frame can be worn without the bags attached, however it is not set up as a traditional pack frame. The bags are inter-changeable and we will be continuing to develop more sizes and configurations. As you noticed in the pricing the bags are really reasonable. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Awesome pricing structure… this is what “gear” should retail for…
I have an entire private hunt camp itching to stock up for the new season.
Have you posted pics of your entire product offering… did I just miss it?

      Hi Vesmann,

You have not missed it, we do not have them up yet. I will be previewing the gear later this month and it will go up on the shopping site at the beginning of the month at kuiu.com. I appreciate your interest in KUIU. Please make sure you subscribe to the blog and news letter.

Jason, will KUIU be at the convention in Vegas later this month?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

KUIU will not have a booth, but I may be there at the show. Lance will have a booth and you could talk with him about KUIU. He tested it for two months this season.

What does BTM mean on the base layers? Im hoping for a merino shirt that is just t shirt style, no zippers, not turtle neck, maybe a chest pocket… For bow hunting in the heat you know… Attack pant and a merino top seems nice for that?

  98. Larry Schwartz Reply

    JR,

BTM stands for Bottom, in other words the merino wool base layer pants. The top is a zippered mock turtle neck. You can see it on the Attack Pant Review page, http://kuiu.wordpress.com/2011/02/14/kuiu-attack-pant-review/ . After the writeup on the Attack Pant Jason did a preview of the Vias camo and he illustrated it with the base layers.
