if our measurements are between sizes (e.g. 42 chest, 34 waist) is it better to go up one size or down a size…how much adjustment is there in the mediums? I typically wear large in your previous gear’s charts but wondering if I should go down a size?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Joseph,

You are a large in both the pants and jackets. I probably would not recommend you sizing down.

Was interested in the gear until I saw the sizing chart. Have been A guide for 14 years. Tried alot of different gear. And tough to find stuff with enough leg and small enough waist for me. I have A 28″ waist and A wear A 36″ leg pant. Leg is closer to A 34″ but always take A longer leg to avoid the flood pants look and the problem of the pants riding up over my boots. Interesting gear though. Good luck to you guys.

Get your waist measured to be certain. We are true to size on the pants.

    Jason,

Do you plan to add a picture of someone of known height and torso length (e.g., 5’10” with a 19″ torso) wearing the packs so folks can see how it might fit on them. We discussed this via email a while back. I referenced the picture they use on the Kifaru site.

Thansk for the update on the sizing info –
Q: As I hunt in AK a fair amount, how much layering do I need to provide for? In other words If I get an XL size jacket, how much layering can I allow for underneath to get a proper fit, i. e. how form fitted is the clothing?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Dan,

This is a fitted system so you do not need to size up to make it all integrate.

    Hi Jason,

Another quick question about “sizing up”, and how it relates to the different layers. If I were going with the complete system, from base layers to rain gear, and have a 44″ chest, and 37″ waist would you recommend XL in both tops and bottoms straight through all of the items?

Looking forward to opening that box in a few weeks!
    Thanks

    • Jason Hairston Reply

Yes, and a 38″ Attack Pant.

Thanks for the sizing chart Jason. That is just what I was looking for. If it helps anyone, I have treid on the large in everything. I am a 44 chest and 32 waist. Even though the chart shows me as an in-betweener on the large/extra large, the large jacket and vest fit like a glove. I LOVE the fit. The pants were too big, but didn’t feel 4-inches too big. I expect the medium pants will fit fine. I cannot wait top confirm that!

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Chris,

You will be a XXL top, L bottoms and 36″ Attack Pant. Confirm your chest size before you buy, at a 48 to 50 you are a XXL. I have a 46″ chest and wear our XL.

Is it going to be possible to add shoulder and neck measurements on your tops. When it comes to base layers I’m inbetween sizes and the shoulder and neck makes a huge difference. I already know I would need a xxl jacket but my shoulders and neck make most all fitted shirts very difficult to size.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi BD,

What is your neck and shoulder measurements? I can check for you.

      Jason

        Thanks Jason,

I have a 19″ neck and shoulders were about 62″ at last measurement, just depends on where measurements are being taken too. My shoulders are a little out of proportion to my chest makes it hard to find fitted clothing, especially suits and other gear.

    Jason,

I am going to buy all the layers and have; 41″ chest, 33″ sleeve, 34 1/2″ waist, 39″ hip, and a 30″ crotch to ankle. The Sitka Jetstream medium was snug on my chest. I sent the jacket back and don’t have any other technical gear so I am not sure how it should fit. The medium numbers seem fine in all but the chest. I have ended up with a large top and medium pants from Cabelas brand and been okay, but the jackets seem a bit big. Is it better to be a loose fit on the top for bow hunting? What size jackets should I order?

    Thanks, Paul C.

    • Paul Chrena Reply

Oh, I forgot the vest. I suppose the size of that will be the same as the jackets. I am ignorant when it comes to how this stuff should fit and am only used to what I have gotten by with. Thank you, for your patience with all of us asking silly questions.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi Paul,

I really think you will be a medium in our shirts & jackets. Order a medium and if it is too tight in the chest call us right away so we can exchange it for you. I do not want you swimming in our gear. You will want our 34″ Attack pant.

Had a couple questions about the sizing. My normal pant size is 33″ but actual measurement is 36″. I am a medium on all other measurements so I was wondering if I should get 36″ on the attack “trousers” and large on the chugach? What do u think?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

I think you will be a 34″ pant. What is your height and weight and build? Make sure you are measuring your waist without clothes in your way and at the most narrow point.

5’8″ 175 (165 by sheep season hopefully:)) not sure about my build, average? Maybe leaning towards short fat man Lol. 40″ chest, 34″ sleeve, 35.5″ waist
38″ hips, 28.5″ crotch to ankle. Planning on the whole system so I just want to make sure I get it right the first time.

          Hi Jesse,

You are a Medium up top, large bottoms and 36″ pant. If you are going to loose that 10 pounds, I bet a 34″ pant will fit you better. Maybe this could be your motivation by sheep season:)

What about shirts, vests and jackets?

    Thanks!

    • Jason Hairston Reply

Hey Scott, yea the pants should work for you. You may want to let the cuff out on the Attack pant to get close to your 36″ inseam. As far as jackets & shirts, you are close to fitting in our XL but may be more comfortable in the XXL. What do you normally wear?

      Jason

      • Scott Tilzey Reply

        Jason,

I normally wear XL talls but with Sitka and First Lite the XXL fit better in the shirts for sleeve and body length but both are a little baggy in the waist and chest. With Under Armour the XL shirts fit real good overall.

How long are the Chugach pant inseams?

        • Jason Hairston Reply

          Hi Scott,

What is your sleeve length. I have a 37″ and fit into our XL sizing. I hate to have you in a baggy fit, defeats the purpose of this line. The Chugach inseam is 33″.

          Jason

    • Scott Tilzey Reply

      Jason,

My sleeve length is 37″ so I’ll give the XL a try. If the sleeves are too short I’ll go to the XXL.

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hey John,

No worries, we will get you fit. You will wear an XL for Jacket & Shirts (what do you normally wear?) Did you measure the smallest part of your waist, no clothes in the way? I wear a 36″ jean and wear our 36″ Attack pant, similar for everyone who tested the gear. I would be surprised if it is not the same for you and you fit in our 38 Attack Pant. You will want an XL pant in the Chugach.

Jason, I am measuring 46 chest and 37 sleeve. Would you recommend xl or xxl. I am a Bowhunter and one of my biggest concerns is sleeve length for me. Can’t stand a sleeve that is to short. Also I’m measuring 38.5 on the waist. I normally take a 38 but if you are layering two tops a pair of bottoms and maybe a pair of briefs will this still work? Looking forward to trying this gear.

    Jason-
Everything looks Great with First Version of the Site. I am confident that things will continue to look better, and be better explained, as you take in all the info. you are getting from us future customers. As you may remember from some of the blog post’s, or email I have sent you; I am Tall, and have really been pushing hard to get those Tall Sizes in the line, (eventually). After seeing the sizes, I am confident that I will fit into some of the gear, and will be purchasing the Attack Pant, the 185 Merino base shirt and pant, and the neck gaiter& and 185 beanie. I think all these should fit, and I really can’t wait to see the camo pattern in my own eye’s, with natural light. That being said, (and I apologize, if this is somewhere and I missed it), but- In the event that they don’t fit as well as I hope they will. Can I expect, to be able to return for a future size increase, or refund, within’ a reasonable amount of time… (i.e., refund in 2-3 weeks, or better?) I already know, you are planning for a Tall sizing, in the fall, the last I heard. Anyways, thanks for continuing to advance hunting gear, so we can all feel more confident and safe on the Mountains.

I am 6′ 6″, 225 #, 36+” inseam, and a 36″ waist, 38.5″ sleeve and have a 49″ chest as measured in the sizing guide. I don’t like to say it, but I hate to have too short of pants or sleeves, let alone having the back of the jacket hike up and not cover my rear a little. I am looking at the guide jacket, chugach set and the attack pants. Will the lengths on the clothing be long enough for me?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hey Jim,

I am with you on the short sleeves, pants lengths and short waisted jackets being 6’3″. We are going to be close with our XXL for you. What is your torso length? Top of shoulders to your waist? The Chugach Pants will need to have that cuff let out to get close to the 36″ inseam length. I think it will be worth ordering to try.

      Jason

  20. David H Reply

Hey Jason thanks for all the support on the blog. I really don’t know where to go with the sizing.

Whether it’s the Chugach or Attack jacket, my build (43.5″ chest, 36.5″ sleeve, 38″ waist, 44″ hip, 30″ inseam, 6’1″, 240lbs) seems to be a mix of it all. Typically a fitted jacket will be an XL for me, but there are often fitted L’s that work well also. Advice?

As far as pants (likely Attack), I am the largest i’ve ever been at a 38″ waist. So I expect spring/summer (when the student sheds his winter fat) to bring a smaller 36″ waist as it normally does. I am also a pretty large guy so i rarely need much layering underneath for warmth. More advice?

Since I hate to wait for size exchanges, how would you feel if I ordered 2 jackets (1x L and 1x XL) with the full intention of sending one jacket back after i’ve tried them on? If this is not a big deal, I would probably do this.

Lastly… I live in Northern Alberta. Winter gets cold. Last season I hunted about 6 times in -35C weather (that’s like -30F) and it wasn’t too nice. I’m big and “insulated” and my HH’s never fail, but can I expect some good protection from either the Attack or Chugach gear? Or will I freeze my knickers off as soon as it’s below 0F?

Thanks in advance for your response to my looooooong message.

    -David!

    • Jason Hairston Reply

      Hi David,

Thank you for the questions! You are going to fit into our XL up top, L Bottoms & 38″ Attack Pant. Unfortunately, due to demand we cannot send everyone two jackets to try on and send back what does not fit, I hope you can understand. As far as super cold weather, this is a Mountain Hunting system when weight is critical, to that effect, for really cold conditions you will want to add additional insulation layers to this system. We are developing more lightweight packable insulation for the future. Yes the Chugach will take what ever you can throw at it.

I’d like to introduce myself, Chris Foster is the name. I live and hunt in Alaska. In fact I actually know where Kuiu island is. I’ve got a DIY Brooks Range hike in Dall sheep and five Mt. Goats to my name. Not one of the goats was taken later than October. Every year, you’ll find me hunting the mountains from August till the snow pushes the game down. I’ve got a background in swimming and train in the pool year round. I’ve got a 52″ chest and 35″ waist and weighed myself tonight at 230. Come Sept. when I’m up in the Alaska Range hunting my DCUA permit I’ll be around 215 if my training and diet go right. I promise you I’ll still have a 50″ chest. So this mountain hunter is looking forward to his XXL gear. I like to shave weight just like the next guy and I’ll be sure to say hi to you on the mountain.

Please forgive me for some of the late responses (I hope you might be looking back or getting updates on comments). I have recently been speaking with Brendan Burns about your Icon and recently your pants.

Brendan and I are VERY similar builds. I am 5’9″ and weigh 155 pounds. wearing the medium tall in Sitka gear gave me the length I needed but still left the waist about 2″ large. Are the KUIU mediums going to be the same way or is there a chance that there will be a smaller waist available at some point?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

Hi Evan what is your waist size?

I was feeling confident about my sizing but am now somewhat concerned about what size to get for the attack pants. I am 6’ 2”, 185 lbs, with a slender/athletic build and wear a 32Wx36L jean but when I measured the smallest part of my waist it came out to 33.5”. Also, my new 34” Sitka Mountain pants were not that loose on me, but I wrote that off hearing that sizing on the Sitka pants might run a little small. Do you think I should trust the measurement and go with a 34” or go with my regular 32”?

    Chest 44″
    Waist 39″
    Hips 44″

I wear 36″ jeans and 38″ dress slacks.

I’m figuring XL on all top garments and jackets. XL on the Chugach pant, and for the Attack Pant a 38″? Maybe 36″?

I’m 6’4″ 215#s – my debate is the attack pant size – what do you think?

Todd, I would put you in a 36″ pant if you normally wear a 36″ pant. I am 6’3″ 220 and wear our 36″ pant for reference and XL’s on top. You may want to consider a L bottom and Chugach Pant as well if you are a 36.

    Hi Jason,
Just received my order and I am very pleased. Everything fits great, except the Guide Jacket is a bit snug(I’ll get back to that in a bit). The Attack Pants are the most comfortable pants of any type that I have ever worn and the Merino Zip Tees are equally as comfy. The quality is amazing, I couldn’t believe that my entire order was in a box that small. That is a testament to the quality of the materials. I also must comment on the appearance of the packaged items, everything that I saw spoke of professionalism. They say the first impression is the most important, well you certainly hit a “Grand Slam” with that.

Now back to the Guide Jacket. One trend that I am noticing from sizing related posts. Guys with 46” chests that are deeper in the chest seem to have a good fit, but those who are wider with broad shoulders talk of feeling a bit snug fitting. This is the case with me, with only the Zip Tees underneath the fit is just a bit snug and with an insulation layer I don’t think I would be comfortable at all. I tend to prefer a bit looser fit anyways, not baggy , but I don’t like a snug feeling either. Wondering if you have noticed this trend as well and might have considered adding a note on the sizing chart informing those with wide bodies vs. deep chests to consider going up a size.

    Keep up the fine work.

My measurements are 45 1/2″ chest, 42″ waist, 47″ hip, and 36 sleeve. Help!!

      Hey Steve,

I would recommend a XXL for you if the XL base layer was too tight on you. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for your business.

    Hey Jason,
Any word on small sizing in this next run?
I need a chugach system, but the medium is won’t work.

Any chance of a womens line in the future? Or maybe producing items in a size small???

      Hi Amber,
Thanks for writing in! I do not have any immediate plans to start a women’s line or to carry items in a small size at this moment in time.

    Hello Jason,

I was just wondering how your jackets fit if you are a taller type person . For example, I am 6 foot tall but I think my torso is a little longer than most because I prefer an XL tall on most shirts, jackets, Etc. I am looking at the guide jacket and that’s what I am wondering about. I have the nuyarn 210 base layer and that seems to be just about perfect in length and I am able to tuck it in with ease. Are the jackets about the same in length?

    Thank you,
    Austin M

      Austin,

Yes, all of our clothing follow the same standards for sizing and are designed to be layered. If you order a large in our base layers, you should order a large in our insulation and a large in our outerwear. If the base layer fits in length, the outwear will also fit in the length.

I have a 38×36 pant measurement, do you have pants that are cut that long?

    • KUIU Ultralight Hunting Reply

      RGJ,
All of our pants (non rain gear) are available with a 38 inch waist and a 34 inch inseam. However, there is a couple of extra inches in the cuff that can be taken out to make the pant leg inseam longer. Unfortunately, we don’t provide the alteration services.
      Thanks

Where’s the love for the female hunter?!? They say you are the Lululemon of hunting apparel, but even Lululemon offers men’s clothing to a female dominated industry. I don’t want to settle for some lame UA or SHE camo clothing. Please add the female hunter to your superb line of apparel!

Hi, Im looking at getting the attack pant and I am worried. I’m a 31 waist but but i’m worried about the length my length is a 34 and it doesn’t say where the length is what would you recommend?

  42. Reece Reply

Well sorry it says i’m a 31 waist with your measurements but i’m usually about a 29/30 waist and 34 length. So i’m not sure what to get, what do you recommend?

    • Jason Hairston Reply

32″ Waist is the smallest waist size we make. A 32 should fit you if you measure at 31″.

  43. Reece Reply

Okay so why does the attack pant say it come in a 30?

  44. Reece Reply

okay will the length be long enough?
