I took the new 3 Pound 9 Ounce ULTRA 6000, loaded it up with 60 pounds, and threw it off a cliff.

Watch below to see what is left after the pack travels almost 400 feet down a mountain.ย

This is Test #2 of ULTRA vs The World!

Love it!! Keep up the innovation. Push the gear to the limits.

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Brady!

  2. Montanafreak

In true KUIU Style. GO BIG OR GO HOME! Awesome test. Loved it. It’s your dedication that makes these things possible. Thank you.

    • Jason Hairston

      Thank you!

  3. Ryan Davis

Wow, that was violent! Keep up the good work. Is there any way we could get an Ultra vs. Icon test? I’d be curious to see how an Icon does on the cliff test.

    • Jason Hairston

For now we are just testing the ULTRA. Maybe in the future.

  4. Scott Rossingnol

You put more effort into letting us see inside your products and processes than any other company I know of. Great products and great company. Keep up the good work Jason.

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Scott

  5. Bill Tozer

COOL test Jason. haha I fell head over heals about 65 feet down a slope like that last year weaing the original KUIU pack with about 40lb in it. I weigh about 200 lb… Crushed a couple discs in my lower back and broke some gear in the pockets of the pack but the frame and bag suffered no worse for the wear!

    • Jason Hairston

WOW! You actually were this test! Glad you are ok Bill and the pack survived.

  6. Kent

This brought back memories of my Archery Mule Deer hunt last October. I slipped my Icon 1850 off to make a stalk on a 4×4 and my pack started tumbling down the hill. It went over 300 yards (checked with range finder) tumbling and flipping just like this. Finished the hunt and killed a 165 Buck and then retrieved my pack. Used it to pack the meat the two miles to the truck. So your test can really happen and I can attest to the Icon and you just proved the Ultra is a safe bet as well. Thank you Jason!

    • Jason Hairston

Thanks Kent! Thanks for sharing your story and happy to hear the Icon survived as well.

  7. Dane

LOVE IT. I have a feeling I know where the inspiration for these tests stemmed from, and I LOVE IT. I am pretty excited to see your next test or two…you know, I may just join your forum. AWESOME.

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Dane!!

  8. Craig Germond

Great test! Keep pushing the envelope and making great products!

    • Jason Hairston

      I appreciate it Craig!

  9. Grant

    Just sick!!!

    • Jason Hairston

  10. Justin Starck

    Quit babying that pack! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Jason Hairston

Ha Ha Ha! Yep you got to baby a KUIU pack! Great take!

  11. Jeff M Valunas

I cringe, only because, I know it is AWESOME!
Clearly, there is a (love/hate) feeling going on in these tests!
I get, being a business owner, has obstacles!

But- Just like our parents taught us; If, (Ricky,Koty,Stevey,Leroy,Robby and Scotty) jumped of a cliff!!!
    Would YOU!
Answer THEN, and NOW… IS NO!!!

    KUIU is better than this!
That was what I was trying to convey, in the comments on the last (video post).

If nothing more, at least you seem, “gitty” about this whole thing.

Why stop here, though??? How about throwing it out of an airplane, or run it over with a train? Maybe, on your next visit overseas, you could make a “pit-stop”, in Geneva, Switzerland…

And have the Scientists at the- LARGE HADRON COLLIDER, shoot a partical, at nearly the speed of LIGHT, into the ULTRA! It could represent, the “possiblity” of a (Micro-Metorite), hitting the ULTRA sitting next to you, while glassing?!?!?! LOL, ๐Ÿ™‚
    Sarcasm, of course!!!

There will ALWAYS be, (a select few) that fail to understand.

I suspect, it won’t be long, before we hear about… “They edited it!”

    • Jason Hairston

Thanks Jeff. I am more than happy to do these tests. They are good to give customers a better understanding of our products.

      • Jeff M Valunas

Your welcome! You know, I believe in KUIU, as much/if not more than any other customer of KUIU!

        I could not disagree more!

“…They are good to give customers a better understanding of our produts.”….

‘CUSTOMERS’ of KUIU, understand the quality!
They don’t need to see this,(because a couple people think, it is relevant).

‘Potential Customers’, may find something in this. Or, they may think to themselves…… “Why is this going on”?

Appeasing (the small handful of people, that think this is relevant; And would base a “pack purchasing” decision on this) is NOT Logical.

At some point, those people need to look in a mirror, and realize…
It is not a ‘durability design, or a pack design’ problem…

It is a ‘YOU’ problem!!! Pack rope, if your (potentially going to get “cliffed out”)!
Learn better (map reading, and route finding skills)!
Allow your mind, to consider “better” (problem solving)!

It is NOT about the PACK!!! It is about, YOU!!!
        Learn, grow, expand your thoughts…

Then, you will realize, what is going here at KUIU!

        If this gets posted……
I can’t be the ONLY ONE thinking this!

  12. Josh Wright

Another great test. I would buy the whole kit, if ICON series was on frames.

    • Josh Wright

      On the new frame.

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Josh!

    • Jason Hairston

  13. Brett Crawford

Such a baller! The Ultra held up, let the haters hate my dude! Kuiu has my business on lock…

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Brett!!!

  14. Kendall

I’ll take that one as a “demo” model. Make me an offer! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Jason Hairston

A couple of stitches and it is good to go. I am going to hang on to it and put it up in the show room.

  15. Cory Benge

    Seein’ is believen’

    Good Stuff Jason!

    • Jason Hairston

Thanks Cory! I hope you are doing well.

  16. Paul

Nice test. Would love to see the rifle strapped to that!

How abrasion resistant is the fabric? I live in Chamonix and the area I hunt is all granite and had.an issue with a new model Black Diamond pack a couple of years ago. The pack in question was light but less than a season of use and abrasion from granite in chimneys, close squeezes through rocks and putting down wore the lightweight fabric through which resulted in a return they honoured and apparently sent back to their lab to look at. How abrasion resistant is the ultra pack fabric and camo pattern on the bottom and back of the pack?

    • Jason Hairston

For heavy heavy abrasion like what you are mentioning I would recommend a 1000D fabric. Granite is hard on fabric as you know.

  17. errol

    A challenge to dare !

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks you Errol!

  18. Luke

So the frame is very impressive, but to me how well the bag held up was more impressive. I thought that would be the weak part of this new pack. While it was going down hill I really was waiting for the contents to come out of the bag and go flying everywhere! No such thing. Small tear in the bag and one strap come unbuckled was the impressive part of this test. Your bag material, and the stitching is light weight and very durable!

    • Jason Hairston

I really like the balance of weight and durability of our 160D Cordura for this pack.

  19. Rich Tuttle

Awesome! Can’t wait to get my pack, keep up the good work!

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Rich!

  20. Vladimir

A good test! And good answer to everyone who doubted as KUIU equipment ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Jason Hairston

Thanks Vladimir! I appreciate the support.

  21. Colby Kendell

Love the transparency in everything you do. Can’t wait to see the next video. Is that the guide jacket you’re wearing or a new style not yet released?

    • Jason Hairston

Guide DCS in Phantom. We have them in stock. Thanks for the support Colby.

  22. Armosino

    Rok’ed it again!

    • Jason Hairston

      Thank you !!!

  23. Chad

Awesome test Jason thank you. Do you have any thoughts on the stress cracks being in the same spot? Seems like although the tundra test was overly brutal, the cracks have all been in nearly the same spot. Great job on the frame!

    • Jason Hairston

The Truck broke the stays where they were pinned against the curb and the tire. The stress cracks from the Cliff Test were down in the frame below the stays. Not really the same place and the stress cracks were very minor. The frame is basically fine.

  24. Nigel Ivy

You look like had way too much fun doing that test, Jason! ๐Ÿ˜‰
That pack took a pounding there. Impressed that it held up. There is the reason KUIU is leading the race – great gear with excellent thought and design behind it and never skimping on quality.

  25. Cody Bell

I love the tests. I trust your products, but this is good for media to broadcast your products more. Also, naysayers mouths become zip shut, because they don’t want to test their products the same way and show that their products could be inferior.

I look forward to magazines and online websites and forums getting a hold of these videos. This is definitely attention getting and creates more conversation and publicity about your products.

  26. Kenton Goode

Awesome! I can’t wait to order my Kuiu full kit for my backcountry elk hunt this fall.

  27. Jimmy liverman

Awesome test , my 3200 should be here Friday and I’ve been reading a lot about the icons on forums. There are a lot of haters especially for the frame breakage. I must say I’ll never put a pack through that torture so I’m hoping all the negative comments on the forums are just that ! Haters. Looking forward to my pack arriving. And praise you for showing the results clearly. Cracks or no cracks that was a helluva test.

    • KUIU Ultralight Hunting

You will not be disappointed with your ICON PRO 3200. It is a great pack, and the STF carbon fiber frame is incredibly durable. Thank you for supporting KUIU!
