I really dig the options you guys are giving us. Truly an authentic “skin to shell” system! Those hats look comfortable.

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Ryan,

I am really happy with all the products in this system.

      Jason

  2. Dale Smith

Good looking stuff for sure! The softshell / microfleece combo seems like an winner for early season & layering for late season.

    • Jason Hairston

Great point Dale, it is a really versatile set up.

As we’ve come to expect with every new item description: perfect!

Clearly I have to start a fund so that I can fill in the pieces later that I cannot afford to buy in this first sale. This vest looks great and I love the hats, too. I’ve spent so much time the past couple of years trying to find all the pieces to build my perfect system. It is time consuming and generally too expensive i.e. Patagonia here, Smartwool there, Sitka this Manzenella that…now it’s all in one place and more affordable than before!

Thanks Jason, et al. Can’t wait to see the true site. Also saw the full page ad in Traditional Bowhunting…sexy advertising!

    • Jason Hairston

Thank you very much John. I am a fan of that ad as well.

      Jason

  4. Matt

Absolutely perfect!! Can’t tell you how excited I am for the attack pants and the vest for chasing things on the hoof in Sept and Oct. I live in a vest from Nov-March in town so I’m also looking forward to the solid colors down the line.

    • Jason Hairston

Thank you Matt! It was an oversight by me on the ordering of the vest on this first go round. I live in one as well and am disappointed as everyone we do not have it in solids this first order.

      Jason

  5. JD

I am curious about the sizing on the hats. Specifically – I wear a 7& 3/4 size hat – with the “one size fits most” work for me?

    Thanks,

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi JD,

It will be close depending on the shape of your head. This fabric and binding stretch so it does help. If you try it and it does not fit we may need to add a larger size for next season. Please let us know.

    sweet!

  7. Rod

Once again – Nice job – The clean front will be great for bowhunters.

Does the vest have any pockets?

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Rod,

Thank you, yes two zippered hand pockets.

      Jason

  8. John

WOW, just great! I am so looking forward to having this clothing to wear on my hunts from now on. John

  9. Cory Benge

    Jason,
I like the fact that this vet comes with a super hero logo…because we will all feel a little less Mortal when wearing one!!! AWESOME, I love this piece ! !

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Cory!!!

      J

  10. Cory Benge

It appears from the photo that the vest has two hand pockets ?

    • Jason Hairston

Yes there are two zippered hand pockets.

      J

  11. Joe S

This vest is one of the pieces I am most excited about. It looks great. It is wind proof or just wind resistant?

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Joe,

It is very wind resistant. We did not add a windproof laminate to keep this vest highly breathable as is the guide jacket. Laminated soft shells defeat the purpose and reason soft shells were created which is breathability, while still adding a layer of protection against wind and light rain.

      Jason

  12. Eric Johnson

    any pockets????

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Eric,

Yes two zippered hand pockets tucked into the seams.

      Jason

  13. HD

What I have been waiting for! Will the vest come in colors also? And are pictures coming of the ball caps?

    Great stuff once again!!!

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi HD,

The vest will come in additional colors in the next shipment. Ball cap post is next.

      Jason

  14. Micah

    Hey Jason,

Are you going to be selling a ball cap with the Kuiu logo on it like some of the pics i’ve seen? I like the guide hat but would like a brimmed baseball style hat. Thanks

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Micah,

Yes I will feature these on the next post.

      Jason

  15. Larry Schwartz

    Jason,

In the title of this post you refer to the Guide Vest and Hat, but in the text you call the headgear a beanie. Am I correct in assuming that although it is a beanie style that this is the Guide Hat listed on the KUIU’s Pricing Structure blog post?

Will the Merino 185 Beanie be the same style, just made from the merino instead of the softshell?

Also, any chance of getting a short brim on the Guide Hat next year, just something to keep the rain and glare out of our eyes?

    Larry

    • Justin Starck

Check out the Merino 185 post for the beanie.

      +1 on a brimmed beanie

      • Cory Benge

        +2 on the brimmed beanie!

        • Jason Hairston

          Noted Cory!

          J

      • Jason Hairston

        Noted Justin.

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Larry,

Thanks for catching this for me. Yes these are the same products. I will work on a new hat with a brim for next season. Lots of requests for this.

      Jason

  16. Todd

Jason just saw the vest and guide beanie.Like the looks cant wait be be hunting in this gear.

    • Larry Schwartz

      Justin,

Just to be clear, I was suggesting a brim on the Guide Hat, not on the Merino 185 Beanie.

      Larry

      • Justin Starck

Either/both would be fine with me.

  17. Allan DeVore

    Jason,

I love the vest! I want one in the Vias camo, but will also want one in a solid color when those come out. I still like the idea of a chest pocket, but I can get along without one. I am also curious about the final pocket count. Is it two outside hand pockets and one interior pocket like the Guide Jacket? Now what you need to build is some Guide Pants (like the Attack Pants made out of the Toray Primeflex Softshell to go with the jacket, vest and hat. I also am looking forward to some Spendrift pants and vest for those really cold conditions. I would have gladly paid a thousand dollars for a full Spendrift outfit the night I had to sleep out on the ground in sub-freezing conditions with only what I was wearing and the rain suit I had in my day pack when I shot my moose on a mountain far from camp one evening last September in the northern Yukon. And with the light weight and compact size of the Kuiu products, I could have easily carried everything with me that would have made me much more comfortable.

Larry’s suggestion of a short brim Guide Hat (perhaps similar to the Sitka Jetstream that I have) is something that has been mentioned before and would be a great future addition to the Kuiu line for bowhunters (or other folks) who want to keep some of the elements off our faces while still being able to draw a bow without interference from the brim.

My biggest concern at this point is that the demand will be so high for all your products that I will not be able to get everything I want this production cycle! I have set aside a not-so-small fortune to pay for the gear, but I fear that my desire to purchase may exceed the limits you will impose or that the supply will be so limited by the time my order date comes up that you will have sold out of items I would like to buy. Good “problem” for you — bad for me! 🙂 Actually, I want what is best for you and Kuiu, because as long as you are successful, you will keep producing product and I will eventually get what I want. Also, you’re a good guy and deserve every success!

    Allan

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Allan,

Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Your requests are in the development funnel. I met with the development room on Tuesday in Vancouver and we are going to begin developing several new additions to the line including a soft shell pant and spin drift pant among some other great new additions. I will keep you posted as we move forward.

      Jason

  18. Doc

    Jason,

Do you have any idea on the solid colors that you will becoming out with later in the year for the Guide Vest? Any change that the Coffee Bean will be on of them for it? That Coffee Bean is sweet, I just wish there where more products that offered it.

    Thanks

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Doc,

There will be Frost Grey and Major Brown, same as the Guide Jacket. Coffee Bean for the future maybe?

      Jason

  19. Paul Chrena

I for one ( if available) am getting all the layers in camo and am glad to hear we can get two base layers. Wish I could get a guide jacket in Major Brown in too, but I’ll be fine, I guess :^) My wife better not find my credit card statement…Wooo, that would suck. LOL!

Will there be a baseball cap in Major Brown with the KUIU logo??? That would be awesome. If so, how much $ and when will it be available?

    Thanks, Paul C

    • Jason Hairston

      Thanks Paul!!

Yes the hats will be my next post and they will be available at $14.99. Be careful:)!

      Jason

  20. Jerry Gowins

You’ve got a couple more winners there, Jason!!

Not only are your clothes highly functional, but I’ll be stylin’ when the elk bust me!

    Jerry

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Jerry,

You will never get busted in KUIU because it makes you invisible, sent free, magnetic field reducer, you walk without noise, makes you 20 pounds lighter and you will never miss another animal:)) Thanks for the kudos.

      J

      • Larry Schwartz

Now that ALMOST sounds like marketing hyperbole. ; )

      • Jerry Gowins

You had me at “20 pounds lighter”.

        • Jason Hairston

No, keep on training!! No shortcuts in this world, as you well know.

          Jason

  21. Cody Canale

Personally I like the vertical chest pockets, but thats just me..
    Looks good none the less

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Cody,

      Well noted.

      J

  22. John Ford

I agree on a short brimmed hat for us bowhunters. Cannot wait to see the ball caps as well. Love the Merino in 2 different weights as well. The Spindrift should be a winner as well for the long back pack trips.
Will you have a shirt like the original Mtn shirt in the Sitka line? This is one of the most useful pieces of clothing I have ever had from a treestand to sheep hunting in NWT. Too much great stuff !!!! I think you will be big time successful.

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi John,

The Merino 250 will function like the Mountain Shirt as a second layer. Well noted on the short brimmed hat as well. Thanks for the nice words and comments.

We hunt mostly in africa were the temperature changes from freezing cold mornings & evening to a very hot & dry mid days.. The versatility of the vest is awsome, for the freedom of movement on a spot & stock or layerning in the coldness of a pit blind..
Thumbs up for the KUIU system in general.. Al though rain & humidity protection is not very necessary, still the Whole KUIU system would make a great overall hunting gear in an african hunt ..

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Samer,

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Please send us lots of photos of this up coming season.

  24. Elliot O

$240 for a softshell vest? come on, you are TRIPPIN’! It’s like that Camofire site, and how they come up with their “retail” price! haha…Lovin’ the stuff though, and am damn glad we’re paying the “dot com” price.

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Elliot,

Vests are tough for manufactures. Basically, I am taking a $350 retail jacket and removing the the sleeves and selling it sfor $240 and it seems really expensive. I agree. But if you consider taking away just a little fabric and build for $110 it is not. This is the challenge in marketing vests, unless we make it out of a cheap fabric like fleece. I hope this helps give a little perspective. I get your point in regards to the expense of vests.

Still pretty new to this blogging but thanks for more and more great products I hope it never ends for your new company. can’t wait for the pre shopping event this month! off the subject of the vest and beanie, but with the pre shopping event. I was wondering as long as we are receiving the emails that means were a subscriber right? Also should you run out of certain items towards the last subscribers(unfortunately i just recently found the website in the last month) will we be able to still order out of stock items and be put on backorder or something? just trying to get my gear in order for sheep and goat this august;) Thanks again for creating what seems to be the best backcountry hunting gear on the planet.

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Jesse,

Yes, if a product is sold out we will begin a waiting list by product based on the back order. If there is something you want and do not get this list will ensure you are first to purchase on the next shipment.

      Jason

How about some guide pants Jason. Next year?

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi Todd,

I met with the development room this week and these are on the list for next season. I will keep you posted.

    Jason,

Thanks for listening to us here and putting the Guide pants into development for next year. Your immediate responsiveness to sufficient customer requests is a breath of fresh air — and the gear is really nice too! 🙂 Your hard work, innovative ideas and customer communications will pay off, buddy.

    Jason,

Just out of curiosity, how many subscribers are there? By the look of all of the blogs I think you may have your hands full!! Your products look great and I too am excited. Congratulations on your venture I am sure if will be a success!!

    KV

    • Jason Hairston

      Hi KV,

We have many more than I expected at this point and I am thrilled to have all the positive response. I have put my heart and soul into KUIU and to see this response is beyond words. Thank you KV for the comment.

Was wondering is the Chugach rainwear very quiet? Last year I bought a set of the Sitka Stormfront Rainwear and it was noisy as can be, so consequently I returned it. Just wondered how quiet it is, but went ahead and ordered the Guide Jacket and Ambush pant for now. Thanks and looking forward to it.

  30. Mike Rogers

Just got my order in and happy so far with everything except the beanie… its just too darn tight. I even let several smaller noggin’d friends try it on and no luck.

Any plans for a “High IQ version”?

    • Jason Hairston

Hi Mike please send it back. I am working with the factory to increase the available sizes in the future.
